When to visit Key West:
Key West is beautiful and temperate all year round, but there are definitely better times to go than others. The ideal time to visit is from October through June of every year. The air temperatures average around 80º during the day, the water is cool but still comfortable, and there is absolutely no threat of frost, ice, or snow in the “winter” months. During hurricane season, which runs June through November of every year, the weather tends to be hotter, wetter, and more humid.
Getting to Key West:
Key West is not as inaccessible as one might think. A lot of people fly into Miami International Airport, and either rent a car and drive three hours south to Key West, or hop on a commuter flight into Key West International Airport. The Key West airport doesn’t service very many direct flights, and the ones they do are going to be very expensive. Most flights to Key West are routed through Miami, anyway. Another option is to hop on a Greyhound bus from Miami. Greyhound serves Key West to and from Miami. It is around a 5-hour ride, and costs around $40.
If you drive to Key West, it is highly recommended that you watch your speed along U.S.1 through the Keys. Speed is strictly enforced in order to safeguard the Key deer population.
Getting Around Key West:
Driving on your own is not recommended in Key West. This is mostly due to the parking headaches. You can also rent a scooter or bicycle to get around Key West, which is a great way to see the sights. There are rental shops all over Key West. The best way to see Key West (and the cheapest) is simply by walking around on foot.
