July through the end of September do see some of hottest days of the year in Key West, but they’re still not too hot:
Average daytime highs:
- July: 89 degrees F
- August: 89 degrees F
- September: 88 degrees F
Summer nights tend to be warm as well, with average nighttime lows of:
- July: 80 degrees F
- August: 79 degrees F
- September: 79 degrees F
As for water temps, the highs in the summer range between 87 and 86 degrees F, not too much cooler than the air temperature!
Summer also sees the rise in the possibility of hurricanes; the peak of the hurricane season in Key West tends to run from August 15-October 15.
Florida is known for its humidity, but the drips aren’t as much of a problem in Key West, even in mid-July, due to the fact that it’s pretty much surrounded on all sides by water (the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean) and so benefits from cooling – and humidity zapping – sea breezes.
What’s more, Key West’s trees tend to bloom in summer and the aroma of the fragrant Frangipani tree is everywhere (the blossoms from the tree are used to make Hawaiian leis). The trees are beautiful with blooms in many colors – coral, hot pink, pale yellow, even white. In addition, Key West’s mango trees are heavy with the fruit – as well as the delightful citrus smell!
VisitKey West is the off-season. Which means fewer visitors – and better deals on restaurant meals, activities and hotel rooms!
- The fun definitely doesn’t stop in Key West in the summer. For example, if you visit in late July you’ll want to be sure to take in Hemingway Days at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. This festival celebrates the famous author and Key West homeowner/part-time resident with theatrical performances, fishing derbies, readings of his works, and even a look-alike contest.
- If you can drive a bit back toward the coast of Florida along Hwy 1, consider taking in a snorkeling tour of the Key Largo coral reefs.
- Take in a glassbottom tour aboard the Pride of Key West.
- Be sure to check out the Key West PrideFest in June, which features a street fair, pool parties, a Pride parade, dance parties, comedy, films and sunset sails.
